The 1970s council estate in St Ann’s is being redeveloped by housing and regeneration group LHA-ASRA, in partnership with Nottingham City Council, to provide a mix of new homes that will meet the future housing needs of residents and the area. The new development will improve the layout and appearance of the estate and provide a wider variety of houses for rent and for sale, including shared ownership.
The £50 million project, which began the planning stage two years ago, will be carried out over four phases. In the first phase four blocks of three-storey flats, a total of 54 homes will be demolished and the site re-developed with a mix of residential public sector and privately-owned properties from single person apartments to family homes. The 200 houses that will remain will have external cladding added to improve insulation and warmth and to modernise their appearance.
Demolition is expected to be completed by the beginning of March. Material from the demolition will be crushed on site and used to infill the adjoining subways.
Robert Nettleton, Director of Regeneration at LHA-ASRA said: "We are delighted to see the first phase of demolition. We have been working with local people and Nottingham City Council for nearly two years on shaping what promises to be a landmark regeneration project not only for Nottingham, but for the east midlands. The scheme will offer a broad choice of housing options to meet a range of needs, as well as a host of design features which will greatly enhance the image and appeal of the area. It will transform the quality of life for local people for decades to come."
Councillor Alan Clark, Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio holder for Neighbourhood Regeneration, said: “This is one of the most ambitious schemes undertaken by the City Council and will make a huge impact on the regeneration of the inner city. It will provide a mix of good quality attractive housing for sale, for rent and for shared ownership close to the city centre. The scheme is a prototype for similar regeneration projects that could take place in the future in Nottingham.”
