OPEN DAY GIVES HOPE FOR FUTURE
Residents at a home for vulnerable women and children in Leicester opened their doors to the wider community during a special open day to mark supported housing month and national family safety week.
Kirton Lodge, which is run by Leicester-based housing and regeneration agency LHA-ASRA, provides accommodation for vulnerable women with children or those in the later stages of pregnancy who find themselves homeless for a variety of reasons.
Residents and supporters took part in a day-long programme of activities including a treasure hunt, tombola, face painting activities and traditional ‘name the bear’ and ‘guess the number of sweets’ competitions.
Other activities organised during the week included workshops on family safety in the home, children and safety in the community and fire safety.
Phil Allen, Scheme manger at LHA-ASRA, said: “The open day was a real success and proved to be a fun way to demonstrate the variety of good work that goes on at Kirton Lodge.
“The Lodge provides a secure place to live, advice and support for some of the most vulnerable members of the community and it was rewarding to see both residents and support workers letting their hair down and enjoying a moment to relax and enjoy themselves.”
Accommodation at Kirton Lodge is funded through housing benefit with support funded by Supporting People. Professional staff are on hand 24 hours a day to provide practical and emotional support to residents, helping them on their way to an eventual return to permanent accommodation.
