SURFING THE INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY AT 75

02/08/2007

Photo of Eileen ReeceSeventy-five-year-old LHA-ASRA tenant Eileen Reece, of Milton House, Beaumont Leys, has passed a computing course and is now completely IT-literate.

Silver surfer Eileen missed her daughter Margaret who had emigrated to Australia three years ago, so she decided to do an OCR course to equip her with the skills to use the internet.

“We used to speak on the phone and write letters but I wanted to learn to email so I did a course at Beaumont Leys Library,” said Eileen.

Eileen, who is also a tenant representative, went to the library, once a week, on a Wednesday, for six months and was taught all the essentials for using a computer, including emailing and buying things on line.

“Now I email my daughter all the time. She can send me photos, and we have even spoken over the internet. I feel much closer to her,” she added.

John Stemp, Managing Director of LHA, said: “Eileen should be proud of herself. She has done really well. As a tenant representative Eileen makes a great contribution to her community and I am sure being computer literate will help her in that.”
